It is the oldest extant Old Russian altar crosses used in the Exaltation liturgy, one of the altar crosses-reliquariues prototyped by the True Cross. The oldest of such Byzantine crosses, of 10th century, ascend to crosses worshipped by the Imperial court.

On the sides of the inner case there is an Old Russian inscription: "This is the Cross of Christ and His Blood and the Robe and the Sepulchre and the Robe of the Mother of God". The external case is decorated by the images of Archangel Michael with the first Russian Saints - princes Boris and Gleb on front. The reliquary could be made in Tver in memory of the Tver prince Mikhail Jaroslavich, after his death in the Golden Hoard in 1318.
