Our Lady of Kursk, of the Tree-Roots (Korennaya)

This is a copy of the miracle-working icon of Our Lady. According to the legend, the icon was found near Kursk under a tree, among its roots, September 8, 1295. A monastery known as Korennaya (the Tree-Roots) Hermitage was established on the site in 1597. The icon-copy reproduces an iconographic type, which took its shape in the 17th C. - a combination of the central Our Lady of the Miracle and the prophets on margins. Late 17th - early 18th C.
